5 Tips for Overcoming Imposter Syndrome as a Beginner Web Designer

back to blog

If you’ve ever caught yourself second-guessing your pricing on your new template, thinking “Who am I to charge this much?” or doom-scrolling through Pinterest boards and wondering “Why would someone choose my design over these?” then you need to keep reading this post…

Because spoiler alert: you’re not alone.

Imposter syndrome is a huge problem in the design world, especially among female creative entrepreneurs building personal brands and businesses. When your work is so closely tied to your identity and creativity, it’s easy to internalize every piece of feedback and question your worth, especially when we’ve spent our whole lives comparing ourselves to other women and falling victim to low self esteem. But here’s the truth, coming from a 6-figure web designer who has been in your shoes (and still often is!): you’re FAR more qualified and capable than your inner critic gives you credit for.

The negativity and low self esteem ends today – Here are a few of my BEST tips for how to shift that mindset and own your expertise… because owning your confidence isn’t just amazing for your mental health, it’s gamechanging for your business.

1. Remind Yourself that You Don’t Need a Degree to be ‘Legit’.

In 2025 a huge number of successful designers are self-taught: There’s so much valuable education online and examples of beautiful work to learn from. What matters most isn’t a degree or formal training (nobody has ever asked to see mine and I’ve made thousands of sales!) — it’s your eye for design, your ability to solve problems, and how well you serve your clients. Don’t discredit your value just because your path looked different – If you create templates that are beautiful, functional and make your clients happy you’re as qualified as a web designer as anybody else.

Instead of worrying about credentials, focus on getting incredible results. Spend time finding ways to improve how you help and serve your clients, and creating templates that make entrepreneurs like you ditch their own imposter syndrome and feel proud to show off their brand.

If you dream of being a web-designer but still feel like you’re lacking in experience and just don’t know where to start, I’ve got you – My brand new course for complete beginners is the only course you NEED to start working towards your dream job of owning a template design business. I’ve taken all of my key wisdom and lessons that I’ve learnt from a decade of web design education and employment to build a no-fluff course that will fast-track your learning and kickstart your career from zero. 2. Understand that Your Experience is More Valuable than You Think.

If you’ve been working with design clients for even a few months, you’ve learned things that a total beginner hasn’t. You’ve handled difficult feedback, learned to read between the lines and figure out what your clients really want, and streamlined your process. As each month in business goes by, you’ve gained extra expertise (and the journey never stops!)

Stop comparing yourself to someone who’s been doing this for 10 years, beause the truth is you’re not competing with them — you’re serving a different type of client at a different stage and there’s space for you. Their client aren’t your clients, and there’s always room for everyone because every client has different needs.

3. Confidence Comes From Gaining Clarity

One of the best ways to shake off imposter syndrome is to get clear on what you offer, who you serve, and how you deliver results – It might sound obvious, but knowing the ins and outs of your product and brand aesthetic will help you feel more like an expert.

If your brand and website feel thrown together or outdated, it’s harder to show up confidently. Your online presence should reflect the quality of your work, and a messy brand will only make you feel like you’re lacking in direction. Solidify your presence with a bold, strong and aligned brand and your mindset will do a 180 instantly.

That’s why I created Showit website templates specifically for designers and entrepreneurs like you who want to feel more confident and empowered with their branding and professional image. They’re designed to elevate your credibility, showcase your portfolio, and position you as the expert you already are — even if you’re still growing.

4. Grow your Email List and Start a Blog as a Reminder that your Voice Matters.

There’s something incredibly validating about people raising their hands to hear more from you. Every time someone joins your email list or clicks on your blog, it’s proof: someone sees value in what you offer and wants to learn from what you’re saying.

Growing an email list or starting a blog does more than just build your audience and boost your SEO — it builds your belief in your own voice. It trains you to show up regularly, share your ideas, and trust that your insight matters.

Not sure what to email your list about? Start simple:

  • Share your latest work and the thought process behind it
  • Offer a freebie that helps your dream client or fellow designer (like a mini brand checklist you can create in Canva or a Showit video tutorial)
  • Share your journey — even the messy, imperfect parts!

This doesn’t just position you as an expert, it solidifies your identity as a business owner. And with every email you send and post you write, you’ll feel a little more confident doing it!

If you’re not sure how to start building your audience, all of my Showit Templates include blog pages, built-in opt-in sections and lead magnet features. You can start growing your list from day one — no tech overwhelm and no guesswork, just clean, beautiful design and strategy from the get-go.

5. You’re Not Alone (and You Don’t Have to Do It Alone)

Everyone feels like a fraud sometimes — even the six-figure designers you follow on Instagram, swoon over on Pinterest and aspire to be like someday… Myself included! The difference is that we kept going, even when we didn’t feel ready, and make the choice every day to overcome our problems and show up as the successful designers we aspire to be. That’s the basis of manifestation – Fake it ’til you make it!

Being a part of a community who lifts you up, inspires you and educates you is the BEST thing you can do for your imposter syndrome, because it keeps you learning and growing. That’s why I built my courses and resources for designers — not just to teach strategy, but to support your growth with tools, templates, and mindset shifts that help you lead your business with confidence.

You don’t need to wait until you feel ready. Start showing up now, and the confidence will follow.

Confidence is KEY and you Deserve to feel Confident and Thrive in your Business.

Imposter syndrome doesn’t magically disappear — but it does lose its power when you start taking action, showing up, and owning your confidence. Your design skills are valuable, your perspective matters, your experience is enough and your work deserves to be seen.

If you’re ready to start showing up like the expert you are (even if you don’t feel like one yet), check out my Showit templates and designer business courses.
