Let’s be honest — getting your first web design client feels like the hardest part.
You’ve spent hours learning, creating mock designs, maybe even building your own website… but now you’re sitting there thinking, “Okay cool… but how do I actually find someone who will pay me for this?”
I remember that feeling so clearly. You want to look professional, but you’re brand new. You want to charge what your work is worth, but you’re scared no one will hire you yet.
Here’s what I learned after helping tons of new designers land their first paying clients — and what I wish someone had told me sooner.
Start with people who already trust you
You don’t need to wait until strangers find you online. Start with your current network.
Reach out to friends, family, coworkers, or even small businesses you already know and simply say:
“Hey! I’m building my web design portfolio and offering a few discounted spots to new clients. If you or anyone you know needs a site refresh, I’d love to help.”
Keep it casual. The goal is to get experience and testimonials. Those first few projects are where you learn your process — not where you make six figures overnight.
Most new designers overthink it, but those first clients are often one conversation away.
Use mock projects to prove your skills
If you don’t have real clients yet, that’s okay. Build mock projects that show what you can do.
Pick a dream client type (like a life coach, photographer, or wellness brand) and create a few example websites for them. Treat them like real projects — pick colors, write simple copy, and describe what problem the site solves.
Then share those mock designs everywhere — your portfolio, Instagram, Pinterest, and anywhere your ideal clients hang out.
Clients don’t care if the project was “real.” They care that you can deliver a site that looks beautiful and works well.
Make it easy for people to say yes
One of the biggest beginner mistakes is overcomplicating your offer. You don’t need a 10-page pricing guide or a full onboarding system yet.
Just start with a simple offer, like:
“Custom one-page website design for small businesses and creatives.”
Keep it clear, affordable, and easy to understand. Once you book a few projects, you can refine your packages and pricing as you go.
Share your work like you mean it
You don’t need to be an influencer to book clients — but you do need to show up consistently.
Post your mock designs. Talk about what inspired them. Share before-and-afters, design tips, and mini behind-the-scenes posts.
Even if only a few people see it, that’s how you build trust. Someone scrolling by might be your next paying client.

Don’t wait for “perfect”
Most new designers think they need to have every detail figured out before taking clients — the perfect website, the perfect prices, the perfect brand.
But honestly? You just need one “yes.”
That first client will teach you more than any course or tutorial ever could. It builds confidence, clarity, and momentum.
Once you’ve done one project, doing the next five suddenly feels easy.
So stop waiting for permission. You’re ready now.
